A wealthy bourgeois, Monsieur Jourdain wakes up one morning utterly convinced that he was born to be a gentleman. Without a moment’s hesitation, he orders embroidered clothes and tutors in dancing, music, philosophy and fencing. Everyone flatters him, everyone fleeces him. And he, beaming, repeating ad nauseam that he has the wit of four men, takes on one lesson after another. Music and dance transform him into a clumsy peacock who fancies himself a swan.
Slipping into the flamboyant role of this man caught up in a frantic quest for recognition, Jean-Paul Rouve prances about, blushes, gets indignant and goes into raptures. He raises his voice, narrows his eyes and waves his arms as if conducting an invisible orchestra. Every line he delivers lands with a bang; every pause he makes draws a laugh.
And we, his accomplices, laugh at this bourgeois who wants everything, who believes everything, who loses everything—all with the most disarming smile in the theatre. For in the hands of Jean-Paul Rouve, the Bourgeois Gentleman has never been so alive!
It’s colourful, it’s cheerful, it’s full of hair!
